Start here: the free, built-in options

Google Inactive Account Manager (free) is the only mainstream product with a true inactivity trigger: pick a 3–18 month window, and up to 10 trusted contacts can download the Google data you chose. Enable it — it costs nothing. But it shares Google data only: no credentials, no third-party secrets.

Apple Legacy Contact (free) releases iCloud data after your contact presents a death certificate — but the released keys explicitly exclude the iCloud Keychain: your heir gets the photos, not the passwords. Facebook's legacy contact curates a memorial and cannot log in or read messages. Microsoft requires a court order in most countries. The pattern: platforms hand over their data at best — never your secrets.

Password-manager emergency access

Bitwarden (Premium, ~$20/yr), LastPass (Premium/Families) and Keeper (consumer plans) offer a request-plus-waiting-period model: your contact requests access, you get 1–90 days to object, silence grants their access to the vault. Solid if you live in one of these vaults — but there's no death verification (an impatient contact can trigger the countdown early), the heir needs an account in the same product, and the vault's own master secret still needs a home. Notably: 1Password has no emergency-access feature (their official answer is a printed Emergency Kit in a safe), and Dashlane discontinued theirs.

What's the difference between a check-in switch and request-based emergency access?

A check-in switch (Capsulene, Dead Man's Switch, Cipherwill) asks YOU to confirm periodically and releases when you permanently stop. Request-based access (Bitwarden, LastPass, Keeper, AbsentKey) waits for your CONTACT to ask, then releases unless you object within a window. Check-in models can't be triggered early by an impatient contact; request models don't require you to do anything on a schedule.

Why does zero-knowledge encryption matter for a dead man's switch?

You're storing exactly the secrets a breach would monetize — master passwords, seed phrases, instructions. If the operator can read your data (as with plain email-based switches), their server is a honeypot. Client-side encryption means a breach of the service yields ciphertext.

What happens to my switch if the service shuts down?

For most services: it silently dies with them — and this niche has real churn (we found two dead domains and one service winding down during research).
